Absen’s COB LED Mega Screen Lights up City University of Hong Kong’s“Tunnel of Future Innovation”

2026-06-08

In May 2025, City University of Hong Kong officially unveiled its newest social landmark—the Tunnel of Future Innovation. The opening ceremony featured Hong Kong’s first-ever tunnel fashion show, a landmark event that blended fashion, technology, and art to highlight the limitless possibilities of campus spaces in the digital era.

The Tunnel of Future Innovations serves as a key pedestrian corridor connecting Festival Walk shopping mall with CityU HK’s main campus. As one of Hong Kong’s busiest indoor walkways, it sees over 60,000 pedestrians daily. Nearly 100 meters of seamless LED displays, built with Absen’s KLCOB V2 series, line both side of the tunnel—forming a virtually unified, immersive canvas that envelops passersby in a panoramic experience.

Following its official opening, the 4K COB display at the tunnel entrance provides students and faculty with an interactive campus navigation experience. The COB displays extending along both sides of the corridor can also be adapted to suit different needs, transforming the tunnel into a versatile digital canvas for art exhibitions and creative showcases.

Spanning nearly 100 meters across both sides, the installation posed stringent requirements for display uniformity, flatness, signal transmission and synchronized control. Leveraging high-quality products and extensive project implementation experience, Absen’s engineering team delivered smooth, consistent visual performance throughout the entire tunnel.

Immersed in shifting light and imagery, the tunnel functions as far more than a pedestrian route—it has become a vibrant hub for creativity, expression, and community interaction. It reflects the university’s commitment to fostering interdisciplinary innovation and strengthening connections between the campus and the wider community.

The successful implementation of the Tunnel of Future Innovation project is underpinned by Absen’s extensive technological capabilities and ongoing innovation in COB display technology.

Absen’s KLCOB V2 Series—a flagship product line in its COB portfolio—features advanced flip-chip COB technology that reduces solder points by more than 40% and eliminates wire bonding, resulting in a 50% reduction in failure rates and twice the lifespan. With chips mounted directly onto the PCB substrate, the series achieves significantly enhanced heat dissipation, enabling 40% lower power consumption and 50% lower maintenance costs. The displays deliver peak brightness levels of up to 1,000 nits and support HDR, 1.07 billion colors, and the DCI-P3 wide color gamut, ensuring vivid, lifelike visuals even in challenging ambient environments. Certified to EMC Class B, KLCOB V2 lowers electromagnetic emissions by 20%, ensuring safe and reliable long-term operation.

Throughout its pursuit of advancing COB display technology, Absen has built upon the inherent strengths of LED—high brightness, wide color gamut, and broad viewing angles—while continuously innovating in COB packaging, optical processing, and image-quality enhancement. These efforts significantly improve dynamic range performance and enrich color depth, delivering exceptionally realistic visuals and immersive viewing experiences. This sustained innovation has shaped Absen’s distinctive COB advantages—deep blacks levels, brilliant image quality, cooler operation, and outstanding durability. With these strengths, Absen has delivered numerous benchmark COB installations worldwide, reinforcing its position as a global leader in the COB display sector.

This project not only establishes a new benchmark for large-scale COB display deployments but also reaffirms Absen’s end-to-end solution capabilities in delivering high-end, customized, and technically complex installations. Tailored to the functional and experiential needs of a university setting, Absen’s solution blends technological innovation with human-centered design, transforming a once utilitarian pedestrian tunnel into an inspirational, immersive digital art space. By linking a local campus community with the broader metropolitan landscape, the installation showcases the creative energy and cultural vibrancy that characterize Hong Kong as a leading international city.
